Update 4/25/13

There are many things going on in the group in Second Life right now. Things that are causing a lot of distraction from posting on this web page. As the Chairman of the group, I must apologize for that. The people who are building and designing an incredible experience for our group members can only be spread so thin. That being said, I would like to take the time to share all the things we have been working on that YOU can be a part of and experience yourself very easily.

First, we have redesigned our home island in the world of Second Life. The first design had some very good, strong spots but under utilized the entirety of the island. We have redesigned the entire island to be a much more pleasant experience and much easier to understand and get around on. It is a simple design of focus buildings around a central walkway with a central reflection pool and fountain. Every building serves a specific function which is why I refer to them a “focus buildings”. There is our headquarters building where we conduct most of our group meetings, the State Group building where groups under the main group that are dedicated to a specific U.S. state can hold their own meetings and have their own displays, the East Coast Conservative Podcast building which is dedicated to displays about the podcast and their social media, the Lincoln Memorial which is a gorgeous memorial to Abraham Lincoln complete with a stunning statue of him, the Rotunda which is home to another Republican group in Second Life called the The GOP, the NRA building which is a dedicated building for all NRA material and has an actual firing range where you can shoot a gun at targets, the Auditorium which is a presentation building for larger groups that has an advanced presentation display controlled by the presenter and finally, the Conservative University which is a collection of smaller buildings with education material of a different subject in each.

The grounds of the island are covered with many different kinds of trees and there is a small park like area in each of the four corners where you can sit and spend time with friends.

Second, we are focusing a lot on building our facebook fan page so that we can get good information to a lot of people very easily. We are posting a lot of unique things and sharing a lot of excellent posts that other great pages post. We are also working on incorporating the events we hold in Second Life in the facebook fan page so people can choose to get involved in Second Life that are currently not. If you think you might like our posts, check us out and like us, you can always undo it…www.facebook.com/rposl.

Third, we are constantly working on improving the state group system which is a monumental task. Keeping the whole system organized is very difficult at times. Slowly but surely, things are coming together. Our basic idea for having state groups is simple, we wanted to create a system where we could have laser-like focus on the politics and issues of each and every state. There was no better way than to create the state groups because they each have their own communication system and can each have their own group leaders who are knowledgeable about the politics and current events of their state. Our Florida state group has begun to have meetings of its own on Monday nights. More state groups should start having their own meetings soon.

Fourth, We created and are developing the PROSL (Republican Party of Second Life) Zello channel for a completely different kind of meeting abilities. With Zello, we can conduct chats with our members even when they can’t get on their computer because the Zello app can be installed on your smartphone or your PC and both work together seamlessly. We currently have one weekly event scheduled on the Zello channel, I will personally host a one hour chat on Tuesday’s at 9pm eastern. I think it’s important that the Chairman be as available as possible to members at large, they are the reason for group in the first place. I can normally be found “Available” on Zello and would welcome a chat just about any time. Anyone can get Zello for free at www.zello.com and our channel is called RPOSL.

These four primary things are taking up a lot of our personal time because we have limited time to produce all the work involved. This website is next on the list and I am already working on finding some dedicated journalists to produce the best content of current events possible. I plan to have specific guidelines for the posting of articles on the site that includes a ‘Prime Directive’ which is that every article must be written as a true, old fashioned journalist without bias and little to no opinion included. There will be plenty of opinion pieces but current event news articles must meet that minimum standard.

The Forum of this site is another thing we will be developing very soon. Even though it is available now, it is in a quasi-beta stage. There is some work to be done on the back side and we are unsure of its stability and security for use and the users. Supposedly it is completely stable and secure but we want to be absolutely sure. If you would to help us out with the forum, please feel free to click the forum menu at the top of the site and post in whatever section you would like to contribute to so that the forum becomes populated with relevant posts so that when new people show up to the forum, there are things there to read and comment on instead of a ‘vacant lot’. We would greatly appreciate that.

There is one other thing I have to work on that I just haven’t had the time for yet. I have not released what that thing is yet but as soon as I get a feel of when I can start working on it, I will release what it is to the group and post about it on the facebook fan page as well as this website. It will take up a lot of time at first but once it gains some momentum, it will easily fit into the grand schedule of things.

The only other thing I am personally working on is my facebook fan page as Chairman of the group, www.facebook.com/tomasibenelli. With so many other things to either do or oversee, it is very difficult to include so days on end go by without anything posted to my own fan page. That will also end up fitting into the grand schedule pretty easily once the momentum starts flowing with all these different things.

The Leadership team is working so very hard to make our group the very best of any in Second Life and as I witness progress, I can tell that they are going to achieve that goal.

If you are not yet in Second Life or have been before and got a bad impression of it, I would ask you to come join our group and participate with us. If you are a Republican, Libertarian, Constitutionalist, TEA Party member, NRA member or anyone else on the right side of the aisle, I’m sure you will have a very pleasant experience.

The members and Leadership team will always be happy to help you along with the Second Life part of it.

Tour of Our Previous Home

This is a video made from snapshots of our previous home on the SIM Keen. It was during the initial phase of our time on Keen and most of what is seen in this video had been changed not long after this video was created.
You should note that you can clearly see a sign inworld that shows events we were doing at the time and that East Coast Conservative Podcast was one of those events. I would bet there are quite a few people who miss those days on Keen.

Just Getting Started

We may be one of the oldest political groups in Secondlife and are surely the longest lived but we are only getting started. There are several great plans in the future for the group and its members and we will post all of them here as they occur now that we have this website to share news with the world. As things are today, October 15, 2012, we are just about to pass a membership milestone. We currently have 598 members in the group and we are gaining members very steadily. This number makes us one of the largest political groups inworld (in the virtual world of Secondlife) if not the largest group that is still active. So many political groups have fallen out of activity but still maintain members on their rolls. I have yet to see one political group with more members than the RPOSL though.

In the very near future, we are looking to upgrade our SIM (the virtual “island” we are on, “Sunset River”) to a full SIM. We are currently on what is called a “Homestead” SIM which comes with some restrictions. The two restrictions that are felt the most are the limited number of people that can be there and the limited number of “prims” (objects) that can exist in the SIM. The one major benefit to a Homestead SIM is the smaller cost weekly. Yes, we pay rent which is called tier inworld. Once things are rolling well with our website and we can afford to increase our rent costs, we will be upgrading to a full SIM which can have many more people present and a whole lot more prims there.

Also in the near future, we will be developing an audio show of some kind that will be available as a podcast on iTunes and perhaps several other podcast directories. At this stage, there is very little as far as specific plans for such a show but we are very willing to hear from our members just what kind of show they would like and what components or segments they would think would be good to include. Any ideas would be welcome as a comment or by e-mail. Just click the “Contact Us” link on the site.

Look for more posts under this category for details regarding what we are up to inside the world of Secondlife and please, go and Like our Facebook Page.

Romney's Taxes - a few Important Facts

Following the release of the Romney tax returns, Romney campaign trustee Brad Malt released a follow-up note on the Romney website. In short, it points out some excellent clarifications and details about the decisions made by the Romney family.

The note is well worth reading and can be found at the Romney campaign website.

Here are some of the details of the release:

  • In 2011, the Romneys paid $1,935,708 in taxes on $13,696,951 in mostly investment income.
  • The Romneys’ effective tax rate for 2011 was 14.1%.
  • The Romneys donated $4,020,772 to charity in 2011, amounting to nearly 30% of their income.
  • The Romneys claimed a deduction for $2.25 million of those charitable contributions.
  • The Romneys’ generous charitable donations in 2011 would have significantly reduced their tax obligation for the year. The Romneys thus limited their deduction of charitable contributions to conform to the Governor’s statement in August, based upon the January estimate of income, that he paid at least 13% in income taxes in each of the last 10 years.

9/23 East Coast Conservative Podcast

Tonight we will be streaming the live recording of the East Coast Conservative Podcast in to Second Life at several locations. The host, Hatton Humphrey, will be at a location called “Pop” as he records the show. We have set up a chat relay system that allows residents to type messages that are automatically repeated at all the locations where the show is streaming. This allows everyone to participate in the show regardless of which location they choose to listen. Hatton typically scans the text chat while recording the show and reads some of the messages during the show, giving the person who typed it credit for the text.
If you are not in Second Life, sign up for free at Secondlife.

This event is listed on the calendar with Secondlife URL’s (SLURL) to our locations in-world.
